iMesh is legal in that: -

A) It has been authorised as a distributor of music by the RIAA in America
See http://www.riaa.com/toolsforparents.php?content_selector=legal_music_sites for a list of other sites. To add: Bearshare is now owned by iMesh.

B) Any free content on iMesh (user shared content (identified by a green CD for music tracks)) is verified against a known copyrighted list. If the files hash is found in the database, then iMesh stops the file transfer before it is complete.

Files with a gold CD against them are music files that have been issued by the record labels, both large, small and independent.

With this question, I have to also provide this bit of legal blurb...
Quote:
Standard content has a Green Disc to its left on Search Results and any other track list in the application. iMesh employs a technology approved by RIAA aimed at preventing the sharing of unauthorized content. This said, no system is 100% bullet proof and on occasion a song may slip through the cracks.
You should apply common sense when choosing which content you download and should not use iMesh to infringe on the intellectual property of others.
